Root Canal

A root canal is performed to remove necrotic and infected tissue within a tooth.   The process leaves the inside of the roots of the tooth disinfected and filled with a synthetic rubber material which acts like a gasket to seal the tooth and prevent further infection.  A tooth that has been treated this way is typically covered with a crown to prevent fracture due to a tendency for brittleness after a tooth has died.  Properly treated, teeth with root canals and crowns can last a lifetime.
