TMJ Treatment
Many people have TMJ problems because of the involuntary habits of clenching or grinding their teeth (bruxism), especially at night. Problems in your temporal-mandibular joint (TMJ problems) can cause headaches, earaches, trouble closing your mouth, clicking or popping of the jaw, and pain or soreness in the jaw. Dental treatments to solve these problems are varied, but can include replacing missing teeth, moving teeth, adjusting your bite, filling gaps between the teeth or constructing a custom Bite guard to relax muscles and relieve clenching or grinding that may be contributing to the problem.
Bite Guards
Custom designed Bite guards are made of a durable, hard plastic and molded to fit the shape of your teeth.. They are crafted to give you an ideal bite and relax jaw muscles. Nightguards are recommended for patients to treat TMJ disorders and for those who clench or grind their teeth at night as a way to protect their teeth and bite. Mouthguards are made of soft plastic and are recommended to protect the jaw and teeth during physical activity and sports such as boxing, football, basketball, or other activities where your mouth may get hit. In addition, these guards protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining. You should never use a soft plastic mouthguard to try to relieve the pain and symptoms of TMJ as this type of appliance will almost always worsen the problem.
